The Accu-Scope 3078-PS pole stand stereo microscope provides high resolution, parfocal images with its newly designed optical system. The rugged, ergonomic design makes it suitable for classroom, industrial, and OEM applications. It's airtight casing helps protect the internal optics, making it suitable for use in harsh conditions. You can choose from a binocular viewing head, or a trinocular head for adding a camera. The microscope has a zoom range of 0.8x - 3.5x making an overall magnification range of 8x -35x with the 10x eyepieces. The 10x eyepieces provide a 20mm field of view, and lock into the eye-tubes to prevent tampering. The 3078 has a working distance of 95mm, optional auxiliary lenses, and eyepieces are available to change the working distance and magnification. A glass lens shield is provided with each microscope to help protect the bottom lenses. The pole stand allows you to adjust for various sample sizes and has a black / white reversible plate. This high quality stereo microscope is suitable for dissection, inspection, quality control, and more.

ASE take plenty of time to consider how you're going to use it. I think that the type of stand you get is much more important than the lighting or the magnification power. For example - if you want to do photography, a boom stand would introduce a lot of vibrations. In the end, I chose this scope because it has a large, flat, low stage -- which means it's easy to rest my hands on my table and use my fingers to move my subject around. If the stage were much thicker, it would be harder to do that. My only gripe is that the focus and zoom knobs are plastic and have a slightly 'cheap'/stiff feel to them, even though I've adjusted the tension. I guess I'm spoiled by the quality of the focusing knobs on my Olympus BH2! Even so, focusing and zoom are very easy to do. I also like that this microscope does NOT include a built-in light source, because I like having more control over lighting since I do some photography with this scope. There are plenty of great stereo microscopes on this site. I would imagine that all of them have at least good-enough optics, so ultimately make sure you put a lot of thought into the stand and the size of the stage.
