Metallurgical microscopes are often referred to as materials microscopes as they allow you to examine surface structures of various materials such as metals, films, plastics, etc. These are different than stereo microscopes as they offer higher magnification, up to 1000x. Common uses are grain size, and examination of surface defects. Metallurgical microscopes are offered in upright or inverted configurations. An inverted metallurgical microscope allows for examination of larger / taller samples, and will have reflected light only. Upright metallurgical microscopes are available with both transmitted and reflected illumination. Additionally metallurgical microscopes are available in brightfield or darkfield Adding a reticle to the eyepiece of a metallurgical microscope will allow you to make visual measurements.
