Microscopes for petrology & geology are referred to as Polarizing Light Microscopes or Petrographic microscopes. These petrology & geology microscopes have special strain free optics and come with components such as a bertrand lens, polarizer, and analyzer. The stage on these microscopes is rotating stage, typically with stage clips or a point counting stage. Other optional components include mica or 1/4 plates, gypsum or full wavelength plates, or a quartz wedge. The special components of these microscopes allow the user to observe and identify thin sections, and birefringent materials like crystals.
